CUP DEFEAT FOR LEEDS UNITED

Uninspiring Display at Park Avenue

WEAK HALF-BACKS

Leeds United lost to Bradford in the West Riding Senior Cup-tie at Park Avenue by three clear goals, and, but for some good saves by Mclnroy, would have suffered an even heavier defeat. For a time at the start they threatened mainly through Cochrane to take the game in hand, but suffered a severe blow when Robertson, following up quickly, put the ball into the Leeds net before Mclnroy could recover after stopping a hard drive by Wesley. Four minutes later Murfin scored a second. Neal and Mills, the Leeds wing halves, could make little of Robertson and Wright respectively while Hart found all his work cut out to deal with the energetic Wesley, who improved Bradford's position, after 31 minutes' play by shooting through from a long pass by Strange. Jack Milburn did not have too easy a time against Johnstone, but Sproston, particularly in the second half, completely subdued Murfin despite the lack of assistance he received from Mills. Brown tried hard to get the United forwards moving, but seldom succeedcd against Danskin and McGrath. Jack Kelly had very few scoring chances, while Mick Kelly and Cochrane both faded out as the game progressed, and most of United's later attacks came from the Brown-Mahon wing. Ward and Lloyd defended splendidly for Bradford and Strange engineered many movements which enabled the home forwards to test the Leeds defence, but Tewkesbury, the goalkeeper, was the outstanding man. The winners will meet Bradford City at Park Avenue in the semi-final. Teams: BRADFORD: Tewkesbury; Ward, Lloyd; Strange, Danskin, McGrath; Johnstone, Robertson, Wesley, Wrght, Murfin. LEEDS UNITED: Mclnroy: Sproston, Milburn (J.); Mills, Hart, Neal; Mahon, Brown, Kelly (J.), Kelly (M.). Cochrane. Referee: A. S. McCarthy, Dewsbury
